Dexter Payne, twice voted a clarinet finalist in Downbeat Readers Polls, has made repeat appearances on the NBC Today Show, Garrison Keillor's Prairie Home Companion, KOOL (now JVC) Jazz Festival, Telluride Jazz.
Dexter lived and performed in 12 countries in Latin America, making music with Thiago de Mello and the late Ruben Gonzales among others, recording in Brazil with Paulinho Tapajos and Beth Carvalho. He returned to Brazil in 2006 for concerts in Rio de Janeiro and Mostra Internacional de Musica em Olinda (MIMO) in Pernambuco, 2011 International Blues Challenge Champion with the Lionel Young Band, he has toured steadily for the last two years in North America and Europe.
Payne has performed clarinet, sax and harmonica with a wide range of well known artists – from Mac Rebennack to Sharon Isbin and including Cachaito, Rene Marie, Dave Van Ronk, Artie Traum, Johnny Shines, Romero Lubambo, Judy Roderick, Dan Sadowsky & Washboard Chaz, Thiago de Mello, Big Sky Mudflaps, BarBQ Bob, Sammy Mayfield, Johnny Long, IBC winners Lionel Young & Little Joe McLerran, Kailin Yong, Tom McDermott, Helio Alves, Haroldo Mauro, Ithamara Koorax and more. He performed at 92nd St Y, Hamptons Music Festival, and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in NYC.
His recording career spans the western hemisphere, geographically and stylistically, from Big Sky Mudflaps LP on Flying Fish to his solo debut on Ethos-Brasil/Dexofon. His latest recording, the fourth with Grammy nominated composer, Thiago de Mello, features the late Paulo Moura, Helio Alves (Obrigado Brasil), and guitarist Romero Lubambo (Trio da Paz). He has also released a recording he co-produced in 1983: When Im Gone, by the legendary Judy Roderick, with special guest Mac Rebennack (aka Dr John) and featuring Washboard Chaz of Playing for Change fame. Payne’s compositions appear on Armchair Cabaret (Helios), Another Feeling (Dexofon) and a compilation, Under the Same Sky.
